Vypov is a young Russian artist whose brush is wonderful at depicting fruit, flowers and precious china, in what is conventionally known as still-lifes although they gleam with light and truth. Vypov marshals on the corner of a table the elements of faultless classical compositions, where the dark backgrounds bring out the subtle play of light and shade. The round juicy fruit seem to be lit from within like so many magic lanterns illuminating the whole scene . Plums and bunches of grapes as translucent as opal overflow the white and gold china bowls ornamented with crawling blue dragons, and fall on the edge of the table, as though, tired of posing silently in the harrowing solitude of the studio where they seem forgotten, they had decided to flee, to escape from the canvas, as if holding the precariously balanced pose indefinitely were too tiring . Strange autumn fruit invited to make conversation under the watchful eye of reddening foliage - what have they said to make pomegranate burst out laughing with all its aceds ? What story, what misadventure has assembled in one place and one moment of time grapes and cherries that in nature never meet in lull maturity? Who made the redcurrants consort with the apples and plums, who made them stay watching, in the shadowy studio where they seem abandoned on a cloth delicately emphasized by an edging of light, just taken from the lincn-cupboard for this show, not crumplet at all ?
